Recent fieldwork and a thorough herbarium revision have resolved some taxonomic problems within the genus Calystegia in Belgium. The enigmatic and non-native Calystegia silvatica is reliably reported for the first time. It is probably often overlooked and seems well-naturalised locally. Several additional records (including a recent one) are provided for non-native Calystegia pulchra. Finally, we ascribe pink- flowered forms of native Calystegia sepium to subsp. sepium f. colorata. A key for the identification of all Belgian taxa of the genus Calystegia is provided. In 1994-1995 and 2001-2002, two demolition areas in the city of Ghent yielded a remarkable assemblage of exotic vascular plants. All species are obviously related to previous industrial, horticultural and/or military activities and germinated from long-buried persistent seed banks. The species lists reflect the well-known longevity of seeds of the Fabaceae and Malvaceae families. Fifteen adventitious taxa of various origins were new to Belgium. Epilobium brachycarpum C. Presl, native to North America, was discovered on several occasions in 2008 in railway yards in Lille and in the surroundings of Maubeuge. It usually occurs in extreme abundance and, like elsewhere in parts of Europe, seems to spread in a very fast way. Epilobium brachycarpum is briefly described, its present locations are given and some ecological data are provided. Cyperus eragrostis Lam., once a rare South American ephemeral alien in Belgium, seems to have recently become naturalised. After recurring records of, often, long-persisting individuals (especially from the 199O's onwards), a large and apparently naturalised colony was discovered in 2002 in Evergem, north of Ghent (province of East-Flanders). The species' history in Belgium is drawn and special attention is paid to recent records. Ecological data (incl. a phytosociological relevé) and original illustrations, based on herbarium specimens, are included. In recent years an increasing number of exotic mural ferns have been recorded in urban areas of Belgium and the Netherlands. Without exception, these plants have escaped from cultivated individuals of which tender taxa bave profited by microclimate and environmental conditions present in larger cities ('heat islands'). The present paper deals with recent records of Adiantum capillus-veneris, A. diaphanum and A. raddianum, Cyrtominm falcatum and C, fortunei, Dryopteris cycadina, Polystichum tsus-simense, Pteris cretica s.l. and P. multiflda. Most of these taxa are (very) frost-sensitive and their appearance may be temporary (Cyrtomium falcatum in the Netherlands excepted). Identification keys, photographs, original line drawings and herbarium scans are presented here for most of the escaped species to facilitate identification. In addition, distributional records and ecological comments are provided and reasons why the sudden increase in occurrence of exotic ferns in urban areas discussed. The remarkable gatherings of (sub-)tropical soya bean weeds in the vicinity of the Cargill-mill at Antwerp and the extreme richness of southern European cornfield weeds at G.G.T. at Ghent and near the paste-mill of Anco at Turnhout are noteworthy. Agrostis scabra - in the past misidentified as A. hyemalis in Belgium - has been found as an ephemerophyte at Ghent; the species is however also an established and expanding neophyte N of Antwerp. The alien flora related to fodder importation in Belgium was followed again during 1995; this yielded several interesting annotations. Additions for the Belgian adventitious flora include Brassica loumefortii, Chamaesyce nutans, Digitaria violascens, Dinebra retroflexa, Echinochloa turnemna (a rare Australian casual), Hypecoumpendulum, Lycopersicon pimpinelHfoliuni, Passiflora eclulis (Passifloniceae, a new family for the Belgian flora) and Solarium chenopodioides (in the past probably overlooked for native S. nigrum). Other noteworthy records were e.g. Digitaria ciliaris, Eleusine tristachya, Physalis philadelphica, Roemeria hyhrida and Setaria parviflora. At present four separate regions of origin could be distinguished, each of them being related to a particular way of introduction: grain aliens originating chiefly in SW Asia and SE-Europe, soybean aliens of North American origin and oil seed casuals — particularly soybean and flaxseed aliens from South-America (especially Brasil). The unexpected occurence of Echinochloa turnemna suggests Australian grain importation in Belgium although former findings of Emex australis from the very same spot could have been referable to Australian import too. In 1995 no species of the South-African element were recorded. A provisional dichotomous key to the species of Chamaesyce (Euphorbiaceae) in Belgium is provided. Growing experiments with both soybean crush and flaxseed waste from the Americas revealed numerous interesting data on the Belgian fodder importation flora. On two places bird seed aliens were recorded. New investigations on the fodder importation flora in our region have resulted in twelve newly reported taxa for the Belgian adventitious flora: Cardiospermum halicacabum (Sapindaceae), Crambe abyssinica (a rare African casual but frequently encountered over at least 20 km along the N37), Emex spinosa, Ipomoea cairica, I. lacunosa, Iva cilialu (apparently first recorded from Europe), Lolium persicum, Monolepis nuttalliana (a remarkable Chenopodiaceae), Solarium amerieanum, Selaria faberi (overlooked in Belgium for at least 15 years), Sida rhombifolia and Thlaspi alliaceum. The remarkable occurence of Middle Eastern species in the harbour of Roeselare is also worth mentioning; among them were Anthémis ruthenica, Bromus japonicus, Entca vesicaria, Phalaris minor, Ph. paradoxa, Phleitm exaratum, Ph. paniculatum and Silene conoidea. In 1994 the South American element augmented its presence and the South African element has been confirmed. The authors' survey of the grain-alien flora in Belgium and Northern France has been continued in 1993. A large number of granaries throughout the territory have been visited, which resulted in six additions for the Belgian adventitious flora: Polygonum pensylvanicum, Sesbania exaltata, Sicyos angulatus, Solarium carolinense, Urochloa panicoides and Verbena brasiliensis, most of them being related to soybean importation. Other remarkable finds were Ammi visnaga, Beckmannia syzigachne, Datura ferox, Echinochloa coloria, E. frumenlacea, Hibiscus trionum, Medicago scutellata, Physalis pemviana, Schkuhria abrotanoides, Solatium rostratum, S. sarachoides and S. sisymbriifolium, Besides the North American and mediterannean origin there is also an important South American element (viz Amaranthus standleyanus, Bidens pilosa, Chlotis pycnothrix, Physalis pemviana, Schkuhria abrotanoides and Solatium sisymbriifolium) and, exclusively in the harbour of Roeselare, a South African element (viz Emex australis and Urochloa panicoides) to be recognized. Soybean import, which is steadily increasing in the last decade, is mainly responsible for the huge amount of new aliens in the Belgian adventitious flora. Therefor this particular group of aliens should probably better be named "fodder-aliens" in stead of "grain-aliens". VL - 58-59 ER - TY - JOUR T1 - Nieuwe en interessante graanadventieven voor de Noordvlaamse en Noordfranse flora, hoofdzakelijk in 1992 JF - Dumortiera Y1 - 1993 A1 - Filip Verloove A1 - Ceresa Vandenberghe SP - 35 EP - 57 AB - New records of interesting and new grain-aliens in Northern Flanders and Northern France, especially in 1992. During 1992 cattle-fodder factories have been visited in the cities of Antwerp, Brugge, Deinze, Dunkerque, Ghent, Izegem, Roeselare and Zeebrugge. In the vicinity of the granaries a lot of grain-aliens of North American and mediterannean origin were observed. Among our records seven adventitious taxa are new for the Belgian flora: Amaranthus tamariscinus, A. tuberculatus, Brachiaria platyphylla, Cassia obtusifolia, Chloris pycnothrix, Emex australis and Euphorbia serpens. They are described briefly. Some others have only been found a few times in Belgium, viz, Amaranthus palmeri, A. standleyanus, A. viridis, Atriplex tatarica, Bidenspilosci, Echinochloa utilitis, Glycine max, Iva xanthiifolia, Medicago truncatula, Physalis angulata and Scorpiurus muricatus. Eleusine coracana, of doubtful status in Belgium, has been found again, The umbellifer Ammi majus has been found frequently in het past years; its actual Belgian distribution pattern is mapped. Bassia scoparia - hitherto thought to be mostly rare or absent in Belgium - seems to be much more frequent. It seems that the recent increase in the soyabean import from the Americas has considerably enriched the Belgian grain mill flora.
