Cyclachaena xanthiifolia

Cyclachaena xanthiifolia (Nutt.) Fresen. (syn.: Iva xanthiifolia Nutt.) (N-Am.) – A regular but usually ephemeral alien (although often surviving for some time). Probably first recorded near a grain mill in Villencourt in 1908. Subsequently observed in numerous, widely scatttered localities. Often persisting for quite a long time but probably not really becoming naturalised, for instance in a worked-up border of Leuvense Vaart (at least between 1973 and 1980) or at the Amerikadok in the port of Antwerpen (unloading quay for cereals) where Cyclachaena xanthiifolia persists since at least 1984.

Cyclachaena xanthiifolia is most often associated with grain importation (incl. birdseeds, soybeans) and never occurred as a wool alien in Belgium. It is usually found in port areas (unloading quays, under grain conveyors, wasteland), along road verges and canal banks or on dumps.

Leaves of Cyclachaena xanthiifolia are usually entire but specimens with 3-5-lobed leaves (at least the lowermost) have been recorded. Such plants have been confused with Ambrosia trifida. However, in Cyclachaena xanthiifolia leaves are more or less velvety to the touch while they are rough in Ambrosia trifida.

In many parts of Central and eastern Europe Cyclachaena xanthiifolia is increasingly becoming naturalised, see for instance Sudnik-Wójcikowska (1987) for Poland and Follak (2009) for Austria.
