Ononis alopecuroides

1. Ononis alopecuroides L. (syn.: O. salzmanniana Boiss. et Reut.) (Medit.) – A rare and ephemeral alien. First collected on a grain dump in Andrimont in 1954. Subsequently repeatedly seen around Turnhout (1965, 1970 and 1974) on dumps and canal banks, most likely also associated with grain importation. In 1970 also seen along river Vesdre in Pepinster, probably as a wool alien. Finally, recorded as a birdseed alien in a garden in Slins in 1989 (Lambinon & Dieu 1990).

Ononis subspicata Lag. (syn.: O. baetica Clemente) and O. mitissima are very similar and these names have been applied in the past for some of the Belgian records of O. alopecuroides. All three can turn up as birdseed aliens and are distinguished in Sell & Murrell (2009) and Stace (2010).
