Paspalum notatum

Paspalum notatum Flüggé (incl. var. saurae Parodi, P. saurae (Parodi) Parodi) (S Am., Carribean) – A very rare and probably ephemeral alien. Discovered in a roadside / disturbed lawn in the Antwerp port area in 2014, close to a long lasting stand of Eragrostis curvula.

The origin of this plant in Antwerp is unknown. Paspalum notatum (Bahiagrass) is a very important forage and turf crop but, given its origin, can only be used in warm-temperate and subtropical areas. In the Antwerp port it was most likely introduced unintentionally with foreign goods or traffic.

In parts of southern Europe it is increasingly introduced and readily escapes. At present it is known from Spain (incl. Canary Islands), Greece, France (Corsica) and doubtlessly occurs elsewhere in the Mediterranean area (e.g. Carretero 1987, Scholz 2002, Verloove 2003, Böhling & Scholz 2004, Verloove 2005, Verloove & Reyes-Betancort 2011, Tison 2012, Siverio Núñez & al. 2013, Vázquez Pardo 2014).
