Paulowniaceae

Paulowniaceae

Paulowniaceae is a family with four genera from eastern Asia (Mabberley 2008). Recent molecular studies have shown that it should be accepted as a family of its own (Olmstead & al. 2001, Oxelman & al. 2005). On morphological grounds it was previously included in Scrophulariaceae (e.g. Lambinon & Verloove 2012) or Bignoniaceae (e.g. Mill 2000). It turned out, however, to be more closely related to Orobanchaceae and Phrymaceae.

One genus, Paulownia, is economically important, either as an ornamental or as a timber tree.
