Symphyotrichum ciliatum

Symphyotrichum ciliatum (Ledeb.) Nesom (syn.: Aster brachyactis S.T. Blake, Brachyactis angusta (Lindl.) Britton, B. ciliata Ledeb. subsp. angusta (Lindl.) A.G. Jones, Erigeron ciliatus Ledeb.) (N-Am., Euras.) – A very rare and ephemeral grain alien. First recorded in small number on the unloading quay for cereals at the Amerikadok in the port of Antwerpen in 2003 and subsequently at the same location in 2005 and 2010. In 2009 also seen on waste land in La Hulpe.

Symphyotrichum ciliatum is a rather inconspicuous, weedy species and has been accommodated in several genera in the past (see synonymy). Even relatively recently it was still accepted as a member of the genus Brachyactis (Jones 1989). However, recent molecular phylogenetic analyses support its inclusion in Symphyotrichum (Brouillet & al. 2006).

This species is native in the easternmost parts of Europe. In recent years it is steadily expanding further to the west.
